Description'My Dear Pegie,
Since I hade the pleasure of yours of the 31 of January I have for sometime been expecting and much longing to hear from you. It is not your usuall way with me. I was att a loss to think of the reason of it. I was glad to hear by my son that you was well. I would have writ you before this but every post was expecting to hear from you. My son wrott me he proposed to sett out for Germany on the 10th this moneth, and thatt he expected letters at Rotterdam from his brother. He cannot well make a long stay, yet it is not to be expected he can go such a journey and return soon. You will have but small hopes of seeing your frind this season as he is now so much ingaged. I pray the Lord may bliss and preserve him. We have great reason to be thankfull to a kind providence that hase keept and preserved him so well hitherto. I shall be glad to know your resolutions if I may flatter myself with haveing the pleasure of your company this summer. The late bade stromy weather hade a great influence on me. I have a swelling in my legs, which prevents my haveing any exercise and is a great loss to me. The Lord is good to me that I am not afflicted with racking pains, but as the outward man decayes may the inward man grow stronger. I expect Lady Jane and her family soon in the country. Poor Bettsie is not likely to get the better of her trouble. The decree of the house of peers in favour of Mr Grant for the estate of Balquhain, is what was expectedwould not have happened. The Empress finds interest in Brittain it would seem but is small. Your young pupill will improve much with you.
I hope she pleases you. I shall be glad to hear your last accounts from my son and Tamie:where is he att Geneva or Turin. I have but small hopes of haveing the pleasure of seeing them soon in the country, Mrs Johnstone and her daughter joins me in good wishes and I always am
Dear Pegie, your affectionat father
