Administrative history	Returns to the Clerk of the Peace under the Act of 1844 (7 & 8 Victoria cap. 101) for transmission to the Secretary of State. This provision was repealed by the Act of 1858 (21 & 22 Victoria cap. 67). Under the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 (4 & 5 William IV cap. 76) maintenance orders on putative fathers were made at Quarter Sessions, but this power was transferred to Petty Sessions by the Act of 1839 (2 & 3 Victoria cap. 85).
