Administrative historyDr Arthur Raistrick (1896-1991) was born in Saltaire, West Yorkshire, and spent most of his life at Linton near Grassington. He was a pacifist and socialist and was imprisoned as a conscientious objector during the First World War and later became a member of the Society of Friends. He was Lecturer in Applied Geology at Armstrong College, Durham, and his research and writings covered mining, industrial archaeology, archaeology of the Yorkshire Dales, Quaker history and landscape studies.
