Administrative historyJoseph Norman Frankland was born in Hellifield and lived at various times in Kirkby Malham, Stainforth, Ingleton, Austwick, Horton in Craven and Giggleswick. He left school at 14 and spent most of his working life as a woodworker. His spare time he devoted to botany, corresponding with experts, mounting pressed flowers and seeking new specimens. One expedition to the Ainsdale Dunes at Southport led to a meeting with Fred Holder who was to become a life-long friend and co-diarist.
