Family papers include those of the Smales family between 1606-1814 which comprise documents relating to the Wharton family estates in Cleveland, Westmorland and Swaledale 1362-1773; papers relating to Anthony Chaytor of Croft 1596-1613, Thomas Chaytor of Butterby 1598-1614, Nicholas Chaytor of Butterby 1625-1667, Thomas and John Chaytor of Croft 1639-1658, Lambton family of Haughton Field 1440-1661; the papers of Sir William Chaytor of Croft, bart., his wife Peregrina, and his children including Henry Chaytor 1628-1731; the records of Henry Chaytor 1692-1777.
A large proportion of this collection contains the papers of William Chaytor of Spennithorne (1733-1819) and include records relating to political affairs, lead-mining, militia and lieutenancy (see NYCROP 15) and other matters c1750-1819; trustee and executor records for John Hutton of Marske, Yorke and Hilton families c1741-1803; correspondence and papers including papers as commissioner for land tax 1798-1814, commissioner for Chancery, Kirby Ravensworth hospital 1803-1804, adviser to commissioners Hudswell and Hipswell enclosure 1807-1808, Teesdale papers 1757-1795, deputy chief bailiff of Richmond 1618-1800, Recorder of Richmond 1699-1811, chairman of North Riding Quarter Sessions 1769-1815; correspondence and papers including correspondence with John Harvey of Ickwell Bury, purchases of Walmire and Thoresby; Coverham & Spennithorne advowsons; dispute with Wyvill over suit to Constable Burton court; genealogical notes; Harmby deeds 1719-1818; NRRD letters and papers relating to elections 1735-1782; correspondence with nephew John Trotter 1795-1815; memoranda book; payment of annuity to Isaac and Ann Nichol 1789-1814; William Chaytor (d. 1819) eulogy.
There are some records relating to Sir William Chaytor, 1st Bt., (1771 1847), including correspondence 1760-1855, architectural and building papers and designs of Bonomi 1815-1847, and a patent of baronetcy 1831; records relating to the Jarrow estate of the Brown and Drewett family 1818-1917; the Clervaux family cartulary; and records of J.C. Chaytor as executor of his mother Mrs Jane Chaytor 1825-1830.
