Administrative historyThe principal residence of the Wandesford family from the end of the 14th century to the early 17th century was Kirklington in the North Riding of Yorkshire. In 1633 however Christopher Wandesford (d. 1640) accompanied Lord Strafford to Ireland and worked there for the rest of his life. In 1637 he bought the Castlecomer estate in Kilkenny in Ireland which thenceforth became a principal seat of the family. The family archives were kept there by the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century.

Some family records (which had probably been kept in the English residences) have been received into the North Yorkshire County Record Office directly from the family: they include a few 18th century deeds but consist principally of 19th and early 20th century estate administration documents. The majority of the Prior-Wandesforde family documents from Castlecomer (which include the mediaeval material relating to Kirklington, Hudswell, Hipswell and elsewhere) have been kept in the National Library of Ireland since they were purchased from the family, but in 2000 the English material was transferred on indefinite loan to North Yorkshire County Record Office.

When HB M'Call wrote his Story of the Family of Wandesforde of Kirklington and Castlecomer (published London 1904) he used the family archives then in the Deed room at Castlecomer House and made a detailed calendar of 270 earlier documents dated between the thirteenth and early eighteenth centuries. They relate to estates acquired by the family by means of marriages to several heiresses and by purchases, but, since the whole collection is arranged in one fairly strict chronological sequence, the documents relating to each of these acquisitions are not grouped together.
