Administrative historyThe Busby Hall Archive contains the records of three families: Marwood, Metcalfe and Hitch. The Marwoods were established at Busby in the 16th or early 17th century. In the 17th century they purchased property at Wilberfoss in the East Riding and at Acomb Grange and Sedbergh in the West Riding. The property descended to Jane, wife of Cholmley Turner of Kirkleatham, who left it on her death in 1764 to her cousin William Metcalfe on condition that he changed his name to Marwood. The Marwood property was thus joined to that of the Metcalfes which lay in Northallerton, Landmoth, Catto and Kirby Sigston.

A few years later, Mrs Anna Maria Alathea Maude, widow of James Maude, died. She was the niece, devisee and heiress of Anne, widow of Henry Hitch, and had inherited the Hitch family property in the West Riding at Carlton, Mestonon, Leathley and Guiseley. On her death she left this estate to Henrietta Anne Catherine Metcalfe on condition that she changed her name to Hitch. But Henrietta died shortly afterwards, in 1781, leaving her brother William (now called Marwood) to deal with her affairs. For this reason, many of the Hitch family deeds and papers survive here (see particularly bundles 31-76, 87-92). Henry Hitch was Receiver General of Window Tax in the West Riding and City of York: his Quietus Rolls and Bonds are in bundles 123 and 124.

The Hitches were concerned with two charitable foundations; Guiseley Free School and Leathley School. For papers concerned with these charities see bundle 91.

The Marwoods were hereditary chief bailiffs of the Wapentake of Langbaurgh, for which an important series of court rolls and papers survives for the 17th and 18th centuries (bundles 129-157).

Other important documents in the archive are the charter of Henry II (bundle 10), the fine survey book of 1760 (bundle 82), the Quietus Roll of Henry Marwood as sheriff of Yorkshire 1674-1675 (bundle 122), the Papal Briefs 1661-1669 granted to the Knights Hospitallers (bundle 185).
