TitleSettlement examination: Laughlan White
DescriptionSettlement examination of Laughlan White. He was born at Greenock in Scotland, which he left when he was about seven years old. He went to North Shields in Northumberland, and sailed in the coal trade for about five years, when he was impressed and sent on board the "Berwick" man of war where he stayed for 11 months and three days. He was then sent on board the "Pomona" frigate and stayed there for five months and nine days before he was drafted into the "Shark" sloop. After three months aboard her, he ran away, and served in different merchant ships until about nine months ago, when being homeward bound from the West Indies on board the "Sprightly" belonging to Liverpool, the ship was struck by lightning, he was disabled in his left arm, and the vessel and cargo were lost. White and the rest of the crew were taken up by a ship called the "Rose" belonging to London, and landed there about eight months ago. He was sent to St Thomas's Hospital for about seven weeks until he was cured of his wounds and discharged. A collection was made to get him home, but once the money had been spent, he subsisted by begging. His last legal settlement is at Greenock
