DescriptionSettlement examination of George Brown. He was born at Sunderland in county Durham, and his mother Mary Brown, who is now in a poor house in York, sent him to Hull about two months ago to go to sea on a trial. He was on a vessel called the "Elizabeth and Mary", belonging to James Thompson of Hull. It went to Sunderland and loaded coals, and then sailed to Holland about a month ago. After being at sea for some time, it was driven by contrary winds to Leith Roads, where it sprung a leak and took on so much water that the crew took to their boat and landed at Leith. Brown walked on foot from Leith to Sunderland and then got a passage to Whitby in a lime boat, where he arrived on Thursday or Friday last. He met his sister in a lodging house, and on the next day they both went to Robin Hood's Bay, and then to Scarborough, and from there to East Ayton. He begged at every country town and odd house that he passed
