TitleSettlement examination: George Miller
DescriptionSettlement examination of George Miller. For some years until about five or six weeks ago, he gained a livelihood by travelling with a fish cart, carrying cockles from the township of Eston, where he lived, to various towns in the West Riding and elsewhere. About five or six weeks ago he lost his horse at Whitby, and applied to a schoolmaster at Whitby, whose name he cannot remember, to write him a petition which he got signed by the minister, churchwardens and overseers of the poor of Eston. He went from Eston to Whitby and other places begging with that petition, and when it was worn to pieces, he got a fresh petition written by Ephraim Jowsey of Loftus yeoman, who copied it from the old one and signed or copied the names of the minister, churchwardens, and overseers of the poor. He went begging with this petition for about a week, when it was taken from him by a gentleman at East Harlsey, from whom he was asking relief. He has since been told that this gentleman was Mr Hugill. He then got a fresh petition copied out from the old one by John Cuthbert of Eston, and continued begging until the present time. About 30 years ago, he was hired for a year by Martin White of Kirk Merrington in county Durham. He served him for a year and since then has done nothing to gain a settlement elsewhere
