Administrative historyThe North Riding Police Force was established in 1856 with 56 officers and constables under a Chief Constable. It was organised in 8 divisions, with the boroughs of Richmond, Scarborough and Middlesbrough having their own forces, and was controlled by a committee of Quarter Sessions. The Richmond police force amalgamated with the North Riding in 1889 and Scarborough ceased to maintain a separate force in 1947. In April 1968 the North Riding Police Force was amalgamated with those of the East Riding and the City of York to become the York and North East Yorkshire Police Authority.
