Administrative historyA Justice of the Peace was required to possess landed property to the value of £20 a year under an Act of 1439 (18 Henry VI cap. 11). This was raised to £100 in 1731 (5 George II cap. 18). After an Act of 1744 (18 George II cap. 20), Justices had to take an oath that they had the necessary property qualification; these were to be kept among the Quarter Session records. The property qualification was abolished by an Act of 1906 (6 Edward VII cap. 16). A number of the oaths are undated but they are all after the Act of 1744-5.
