Administrative historyUnder the Acts of 1795 (35 George III cap. 5) and 1796 (37 George III cap. 4) for raising a certain number of men for service in the Army and Navy, the overseers of the poor were to make returns to the Justices in Petty Sessions of men volunteering, and the Justices were in turn to make returns to the Clerk of the Peace to be enrolled in Quarter Sessions. The North Riding was to furnish 297 men for the Navy under the Act of 1795 and 385 men under the Act of 1796.
