Administrative historyA certificate that the sacrament of Holy Communion had been received according to the usage of the Church of England was required from all persons appointed to public office under the Test Act of 1672 (25 Charles II cap. 2). This was repealed by an Act in 1828 (9 George IV cap. 17) when an undertaking not to injure the established church was substituted.
