Title	Records of hairpowder duty : North Riding Quarter Sessions
Description	This sub-fonds relates to records of enrolment, registration, deposit and returns. It consists of records relating to the use of hairpowder, including: - registers of certificates for the use of hairpowder [1795-1797] These registers are arranged alphabetically by parish and give the date of the certificate, and the name and the description of the user (mostly of the upper classes and servants).

Administrative history	The Acts of 1795 (35 George III caps. 49 & 112) obliged persons using hairpowder to take out annual certificates with a stamp duty of 1 guinea. Lists were to be transmitted by the Commissioners to the Clerk of the Peace. These were discontinued in most counties after a few years, although the Act was not actually repealed until the Statute Law Revision Acts of 1861 and 1871.
