Administrative historyPoll books for contested elections were to be preserved among the records of Quarter Sessions in pursuance of an Act of 1711 (10 Anne cap.23, s.5). The Ballot Act of 1872 (35 & 36 Victoria cap. 33) replaced poll books by ballot papers which were forwarded to the Clerk of the Crown in Chancery.
