| Administrative history | Oaths were required by the Test Act of 1672 (25 Charles II cap. 2) and other post-Restoration Acts which were aimed at excluding from positions of influence papists, nonconformists, Jacobites, and others whose loyalty to the government and the established Anglican Church was suspect.
