Administrative historyThe parish of Whorlton, lying six miles to the south west of Stokesley at the foot of the Cleveland Hills contains the villages, townships and hamlets of Faceby, Goulton, Heathwaite, Potto, Scarth Wood, Scarthnick, Scugdale, Shepherd Hill, Swainby, Trenholme and West Lees.
The ancient parish church of Holy Cross was last used for divine service on the 7th March 1875 and was replaced by the current church in 1875 at a cost of around £5000. Between 1823 and 1890, the chapelry of Faceby became a parish in its own right.
