Administrative historyThe parish of Ampleforth is served by a church dedicated to Saint Hilda. A church has stood on this site since Saxon times, but the first stonework dates from around 1250. A 'vicaridge' was created in Ampleforth by the Dean and Chapter at York on Holy Innocent's Day in 1304. The church was renovated and partly rebuilt in 1866. This information is from North Yorkshire County Record Office, reference PR/AMP/12/2.
