Summary of case: Mr Johnson submitted a claim for exemption on grounds of conscientious objection in Feb 1917. His claim was for absolute exemption on grounds of religious faith. He was referred to the Committee On Work of National Importance (Pelham Committee) in order to find suitable work of national importance, (Pelham Committee case number 837). The Pelham Committee will only approve his exemption when Mr Johnson accepts an offer of such work. As of July 1917, Mr Johnson has not found suitable work and has raised objections to any such work offered to him. The Committee refer the case back to tribunal on 6 July and it is refused on 18 July – his certificate of temporary exemption is withdrawn. The local tribunal appeal dismisses his claim on grounds of conscientious objection stating his ‘conscience appears to be a weed of recent growth!’
