Summary of case: Applied for “absolute and complete exemption from military service of any kind”. Christian for many years and “could not conscientiously take any part in the slaughter of my fellow man….Not willing to perform non-combatant duties which would assist in perfecting the military machine.” Local tribunal decision 28 Mar 1916: Exempt from combatant service. Case to North Riding Appeal Tribunal: “If I cannot have absolute exemption, or work under civil authority, I am willing to undergo such penalty as may be metred out to me rather than disobey my conscience.” Claimed the local tribunal had recognised his conscientious objection, and could give him absolute exemption, as they had in “cases of exactly similar character”. Appeal case to Central Tribunal, claimed the North Riding appeal tribunal members “were not capable of judging any man’s conscience, as they take no notice of we conscientious objectors and therefore do not judge in an impartial manner”. He also stated that the North Riding appeal tribunal had two different panels, one recommended several appellants to the Pelham Committee and the other, that he went before, upheld the local tribunal in every case.
