Would also decline non-combatant service under military direction. “So while realising the serious consequences which may attend my attitude, yet I am resolved to remain faithful to my belief.” Local tribunal decision 28 Mar 1916: Exempt from combatant service. However, they commented to the North Riding appeal tribunal that the appellant had stated “he had held his present views four years. He is a member of the No Conscription Fellowship. The tribunal were very doubtful as to the bona fides of the claim and hesitated whether to refuse it altogether.” Appeal made to central tribunal, simple statement of opposition “to all wars as they are contrary to the teaching of Christ.”
