| Administrative history | The Wood family papers relate mainly to the lordship of Middleham in the county of York, the greater part of the correspondence being addressed to Thomas Wood esquire of Littleton, Middlesex. The lordship of Middleham was conveyed by the City of London to Thomas Wood in 1661, and it remained with that family until 1889, when it was sold to Samuel Cunliffe-Lister, later Lord Masham of Swinton.
The records of the Northern Regiment, West Riding Yeomanry Cavalry (from 1819 called the Yorkshire Hussars) show that there were two commanding officers between 1802 and 1858: Robert Harvey (from 1802 to 1819) and (from 1819) Thomas Philip (Robinson), 3rd Baron Grantham, who in 1833 became 2nd Earl de Grey. The earl died in November 1859. During the 1880s the hon. Colonel was Lord Lascelles (later 5th earl of Harewood) and the 6th earl was later a major in the regiment. By 1902 (see item 38) William Thomas (Orde Powlett) 4th Baron Bolton (1845 1922) was hon. Colonel (late Lieutenant Colonel commanding Yorkshire (Princess of Wales's Own) Hussars Yeomanry. His son William George Algar, 5th Baron Bolton (1869 1944) was Lieutenant of the Yorkshire (Princess of Wales's Own) Hussars Imperial Yeomanry. The records must have remained at Studley Royal in the possession of the marquess of Ripon, successor to Earl de Grey, after command of the Hussars passed out of the family. A letter of 1887 (see item 30) records that they were transferred to 'Mr. Orde Powlett' temporarily, to be passed on in due course to Lord Lascelles. Later they were transferred again to Lord Bolton. |
