Barnes had previously been convicted of felony at the Quarter Sessions for the East Riding held at Beverley on 14 October 1878

With certificate of conviction at the Quarter Sessions for the East Riding held at Beverley on 14 October 1878 of George Barnes for breaking into the dwelling house of James Wilson on 4 July 1878 and stealing one silver watch, one pair of trousers, one coat, two shirts and two pairs of stockings, the property of the said James Wilson. Barnes was sentenced to hard labour at the prison at Kingston upon Hull for twelve calendar months, Certificate dated 26 June 1882
