Suchland had previously been convicted of felony at Middlesbrough Borough Petty Sessions on 4 November 1878

With certificate of conviction at the borough of Middlesbrough on 4 November 1878 before two justices of the peace of Randolf Johann William Suchland aged 14 years for stealing three pistols value 5s, the property of Robert Scott of the borough of Middlesbrough, at the borough of Middlesbrough on 25 October 1878. Suchland was sentenced to hard labour at the House of Correction at Northallerton for 14 days and afterwards to two years detention in a reformatory school. Certificate dated 3 January 1881
