Lancaster had previously been convicted of felony at a Petty Sessions for the borough of Middlesbrough on 30 May 1872

Hammond had previously been convicted of felony at a Petty Sessions held at Mendham in Norfolk on 9 February 1872

With certificate of conviction at a Petty Sessions for the borough of Middlesbrough held on 30 May 1872 of John Lancaster for stealing a number of postage stamps, the property of Hugh Gilzean Reid. Lancaster was ordered to be whipped with six strokes of a birch rod. Certificate dated 5 January 1875



With certificate of conviction before two Justices of the Peace at Mendham in Norfolk on 9 February 1872 of Samuel Hammond of Shimpling in Norfolk labourer aged 12 years for stealing a leather strap value 6d, the property of Robert Barker, at the parish of Langmere in Norfolk on 31 January 1872. Hammond was sentenced to be imprisoned at the House of Correction at the castle of Norwich for ten days and to be once privately whipped, and then to be sent to a reformatory school for two years from 19 February 1872. Certificate dated 31 December 1874
