DescriptionBill of indictment of George Neish Gardner for obtaining 9s 9d from Elizabeth Stevenson wife of David Stevenson by falsely pretending that Mr Thomas Newcomb of 41 Wellington Street in Middlesbrough was the head agent for a sick and benefit club, i.e. The Northern Patriotic Life Assurance Association and Sick Benefit Company Limited, and that he (Gardner) was authorised to collect money for it, and that the club was enrolled according to statute. Gardner claimed that if Elizabeth Stevenson's husband entered the club, he would be entitled to receive 5s a week in the event of sickness after he had been in it three months, and 10s a week in the event of sickness after he had been in it six months
