DescriptionBill of indictment of James Cowper late of the parish of Yarm labourer for obtaining goods by deception. Cowper falsely pretended to Elizabeth Spence wife of Joseph Spence that he had been sent by James Harrison, labourer and lodger in the house of Joseph Spence at the parish of Yarm, for a coat value 10s and a pair of shoes value 5s, as Harrison was going to walk six miles up the line with John Watson, a railway contractor with whom he was working on the Leeds and Thirsk Railway. He also pretended that he had been sent for bread and meat, so obtaining two pounds weight of meat value 5s and two pounds weight of bread value 2s, the property of Joseph Spence
