DescriptionBill of indictment of Robert Groves otherwise Robert Hugill Groves late of the parish of Whitby labourer for embezzling the sums of £170, £30 and £40 from the stewards of the friendly society called The Agreeable Society of Whitby; and for stealing ten gold coins called sovereigns value £10, ten bank notes each for the payment of £1 value £10, ten promissory notes each for the payment of £1 value £10, five banker's cheques each for the payment of £10 value £50, and ten coins called shillings value 10s, the property of the said stewards; and ten pounds of sovereigns value £10, ten half-crown coins value 25s, and ten shilling coins value 10s, the property of Francis Easton and William Lee

Groves was employed as clerk to Francis Easton and William Lee, stewards of the friendly society

Offences committed at the parish of Whitby on 1 May, 1 June and 1 August 1824
