| Description | Draft indictment of Robert Smith late of the parish of Yarm labourer for blasphemy. In February 1822 at the parish of Yarm he said "I am a deist and do not believe one word of the Gospels. The miraculous conception, birth and ascension of Jesus Christ is all a humbug and only fit for old wives, and if there was such a person, the virgin Mary was a whore and Jesus Christ a bastard"; and in August at the parish of Yarm he said "The Christian religion is a mere fable invented by interested persons for their own purposes"
