Description | Brief for the prosecutor against the inhabitants of the township of Melbecks in the parish of Grinton for not repairing a part of the highway. The prosecutor, Mr Langhorne, is a "gentleman of fortune" living at Reeth who has often complained that the road was out of repair, narrow, and dangerously adjoined a slope on one side where it was cut into the side of a steep hill. The inhabitants were indicted and have improved the state of the road, although there was a question whether or not they were liable for the road not being of sufficient breadth. The parties have now agreed that the indictment should be quashed |
