Description | Petition to the Justices from the churchwardens, overseers of the poor and principal inhabitants of the township of Clifton
All vagrants removed with a pass from the City of London, the southern counties, Lincolnshire and the town of Kingston upon Hull , after passing through York, are delivered to the constable of Clifton to be conveyed to all parts of the North Riding north of Scarborough or to Neasham in county Durham. In the year ending Michaelmas 1816, 127 vagrants were so removed. As there is no house for the reception of vagrants, the constable has to take them into his own house and the township has to provide a tilted cart for their removal. The county allowance of 6d per mile is too little, and they ask for an increase in the mileage allowance |
