Description | Letter from Christopher Hunter at Whitby to Thomas Paul esquire at Malton including a certificate that Joseph Clark of Whitby was a Quaker and therefore exempt from serving on juries. At the last Sessions, a fine was imposed on Clark for non-attendance as a juryman, with liberty for him to challenge it at the next Sessions. Against Hunter's advice, Clark says that the certificate will be sufficient to cancel the fine, without him having to do anything further at the Sessions. Mr Clark was always a Quaker and regularly attends the Meeting; his children are in Close Society, as was he until he armed his ship the same as other merchant ships |
