TitleLetter from J. Lister at Ayton relating to a man who had been begging
DescriptionLetter from J. Lister at Ayton to William Wailes esquire, Clerk of the Peace. He has a "reumatick affection" that has prevented him from attending the Sessions, and so is forwarding an examination of a man, and a woman who pretends to be his wife, but who didn't know his name. The man has been begging around the country with a petition, pretending to have lost two cows, and had a book recording the names of those who had given him money; but he tore these up when he found he was to be taken before the magistrates. The pieces were brought to Mr Lister, who got his tenant at the New Inn at Snainton to put them back together as far as possible. The prisoner was impertinent when brought before Lister, but he feels that the imprisonment that the offender has undergone is sufficient punishment for the offence

Lister also encloses a bill for what he has paid for repairs to the two ends of Ayton Bridge; and asks to be told if the township of Cayton plead or submit to his presentment
