TitleExamination of Thomas Cholmley, a rogue and vagabond
DescriptionExamination of Thomas Cholmley. He was born at Hutton near Kendal in Westmorland and when he was about 13 years old, he was apprenticed by indenture to Thomas Harper, then a breeches maker and glover at Lambeth in Surrey. He served three years at Lambeth and then left by agreement with his master. He went to sea with Captain Thomas Baddison to the East Indies, and continued as a seaman with different masters and on different voyages until about five or six years ago, when he "got a misfortune" that made him unfit to continue to be a sailor. Since then he has gone round the country selling corks, blue and other articles but without having a hawker's licence. About a week ago, when he had disposed of almost all of his goods at Scarborough, he set off for Kendal. He came through Whitby to Guisborough on Thursday night last, where he lodged. On the Friday morning he went back to Skelton in order to get a pass from John Wharton esquire of Skelton Castle, but was apprehended as a rogue and vagabond
