Description | This sub-fonds relates to records of enrolment, registration, deposit and returns. It consists of original notices of intentions to use printing presses. The items give names, signatures, place of residence, type of press and sometimes occupation and place of printing. They includes some receipts for notices of intention. |
Administrative history | Under the Unlawful Societies Act of 1799 (39 George III cap. 79, ss. 23 & 35) printers and manufacturers of types and printing presses were required to send a notice to the Clerk of the Peace and to obtain a certificate. The notices were to be filed and copies sent to the Secretary of State. The Act was repealed in 1869. |
