Administrative historyThe returns of 1829 and 1836 were made preparatory to returns by the Clerk of the Peace to central government following parliamentary resolutions. The returns of 1836 were printed by order of the House of Commons. No returns to the Clerk of the Peace of places of worship of protestant dissenters in accordance with an Act of 1812 (52 George III cap. 155) have been found in this County.

The certificates of 1791-3 were deposited in accordance with the provisions of an Act of 1791 (31 George III cap. 32, s. 5) which relieved papists of certain penalties subject to their recording at Quarter Sessions their places of worship and the names of their priests.
