Administrative historyAn Act of 1715 (1 George I, st. 2, cap. 55) and later Acts directed that papists' estates were to be enrolled in the county in which they lay. This followed the first Jacobite rebellion of 1715 in which many Roman Catholics were involved. An Act of 1716 (3 George I cap. 18) also laid down that conveyances by deed or will were to be enrolled. The object of this was to facilitate the seizure of property belonging to Jacobites in the event of further trouble.
