Administrative history | The parish of Bedale covers around 8,000 acres and is situated around six miles from Masham and eight from Northallerton. The church there is dedicated to St Gregory and was built in the time of Edward I. A church has occupied the site from Saxon times and was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 and was restored in 1854. The parish covered the townships of Aiskew, Firby, Burrill and Cowling, Crakehall and Langthorne. On the 11th of April 1840, the townships of Great Crakehall and Langthorne which were formerly under the jurisdiction of the parish of Bedale were joined with part of East Brompton in Patrick Brompton to become their own parish. The church, built in 1839 was dedicated to St Gregory. There is also a church at Langthorne dedicated to St Mary Magdalene.
