Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 83 Appeal against conscription of: James William Cook Age: 43 Address: 109 High Street, Brotton Occupation: Newsagent, stationer, assistant overseer Local tribunal: Skelton and Brotton District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: Not stated Appellant: A R Williamson, National Service Representative Summary of case: I contend that it is not in the national interest that this man should be retained in civil life as a newsagent and stationer and consider that he would be more usefully employed in military service. The local tribunal had previously granted a three-month exemption to 6 Feb 1919 on the grounds that Cook would suffer serious hardship as he is fully employed in his present occupation which in addition to that of a newsagent and stationer includes a sub-post office. He is also the assistant overseer for the Parish of Kilton and having regard to his age 43 and the fact that he is now attached to the anti-aircraft battery at Brotton, the tribunal were of opinion that in view of the present state of affairs the man was doing very useful work at home. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding appeal tribunal: nd Case not heard |
