Summary of case: Case papers for NRCC/CL 9/1/5809 which state: Smith is in charge of four acres of vegetable and fruit gardens no used entirely for utilitarian purposes, no flowers, for producing vegetables for 26 persons and for the Fleet. Any surplus production is sold wholesale in Scarborough and the surplus fruit is sent to Driffield to be made into jam. Before the war nine persons were employed now four., namely Smith, a labourer 49 grade 3, and two boys 14 and 16. The gardens belong to Lord Derwent and no part of the Harkness Estate is producing so much food for the country as these four acres. Smith has been in charge of the gardens for ten years and works from six in the morning until dark. Smith was granted exemption in July 1916 and graded C1 now graded 1B1.
