Summary of case: Case papers for NRCC/CL 9/1/5808 which state: ‘That this man is not certified by R B6 (revised) being under the age as to code no 524 and 531. His personal claim is not strong enough to warrant his exemption from military Service.’ In their reasons for exempting Dove, the local tribunal states: ‘Although this man is not in a certified occupation still in the opinion of the local tribunal he is doing work of great national importance and should not be disturbed. Some evidence was given that at one-time Dove had fits and although his grading may not be of the least the opinion of the tribunal is that his health is such as should be thoroughly enquired into before he is allowed to join the army.’ The Advisory Committee for the Scarborough Fish Merchants considered that Mr G Dove is essential to the trade as he is the only curer left on the firm of Messrs T Dove & Son
