Summary of case: ‘I am in my 50th year, married, two children and a sister entirely dependent on me. In view of my age I feel that I should be of more sue in civil life than in the army and I propose enrolling wither as a War Agricultural Volunteer or War Volunteer Class Z. I should like to add that I have been a member of the Volunteer Force (Thirsk Company) since January 1915 and Sergeant major since May 1916, under the mistaken impression that this was Home Defence Duty and Work of national importance.’
