Reference No 001. This man’s usual and principal occupation is that of gardener in private service: he therefore comes under the class of ‘outdoor servant’, having been classified in category B1 or grade 2. His application for the renewal of his exemption was made by his employer on wholly occupational grounds.’ A letter of 11 September 1918 from the Clerk of the North Riding Appeal Tribunal to the Revd E A VB Pitman, Stonegrave Rectory, Hovingham, Malton stating that the case was ongoing: ‘On making further enquiries I find that the papers relating to this man’s case have been in the hands of the War Agricultural Committee sine 14 May 1918, but they have not dealt with the case, and are not able to do so. Your best course is to again bring the matter before the local tribunal for them to deal with it.’
