Summary of case: ‘I am the sole proprietor of a cinema in Richmond and last year took lease of a plot of land erected another cinema and garage for eight cars adjacent to Hipswell Camp which is now ready for opening though not quite completed. I took this lease as I was rejected from the army in May 1916. In January or February 1917 I was again rejected. I was called up again for medical examination on 24 May 1917 and was passed C1. On 13 June 1918 was re-examined and passed grade 2. I have had rheumatic fever twice. I am paying rent of £200 per annum and it is impossible for me to wind up my business which is a one-man business and have no one left who can carry on. If I have to join the army, it will mean very serious financial loss to me. I have one son aged 13 at Scorton Grammar School and I do not wish to have his education interfered with as I am giving him the best education I can afford. I also have four motor cars (hackney) one only of which is running on account of the shortage of labour and petrol. I am a member of the 2/3rd NRV Regiment.’
