The original claim for exemption was made by his mother, who owns the family drapery and millinery business, in which Sawdon works. All family members are dependent on the business and without Sawdon's experience, the business could not continue. Temporary exemption granted to 1 August 1916 to allow him to put his affairs in order. Appealed by military representative who argues that no serious hardship would ensue and that Sawdon’s work is not work of national importance.
