Summary of case: Mennell owns and runs a temperance hotel in Whitby. He is married with no children and his wife jointly runs the hotel with him. She would be unable to manage the whole business by herself. The army separation allowance would not cover their rent or rates, so not only would they lose their business, but also their home. Temporary exemption granted to September 1916 to allow Mennell to put his affairs in order. Appeal made by military representative on the grounds that Mennell’s wife could hire a girl to help out and no serious hardship would ensue.
