Samuel Smith states that all eligible men in my employ have already gained the forces or have attested and that Mapplebeck was the only workman for whom I shall appeal because he had been unable to find anyone to replace him. Smith also explains that he had also paid bonuses to men who had volunteered at the beginning of the war
