Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 975 Appeal against conscription of: Arthur Edward Sayer Jnr Age: 18 Address: Union House Farm, Skeeby Occupation: Horseman etc Local tribunal: Richmond Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, e) ill health or infirmity, g) exempt occupation Appellant: William Ewart Sayer Summary of case: William Sayer originally leased a farm at Hipswell, but this was requisitioned by the military. Consequently, Arthur should have applied for exemption via the Leyburn tribunal, which is where he was registered, not the Richmond Rural District Council tribunal where he currently lives. This seems to have complicated the process somewhat. Arthur is a haemophiliac (supported by doctors note) and also has fits. The claim is for absolute exemption on grounds of his health and that he is needed to run the farm. The local tribunal felt that Arthur is still capable of serving in a non-combatant role so refuse his application. Appeal tribunal grant temporary exemption to Oct 1916. Supporting evidence: Yes Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 24 Jun 1916. Allowed. Exemption to 1 Oct 1916. |
