Summary of case: The local tribunal gave conditional exemption on the grounds that he is indispensable to the business (grocery). The step father, Mr Place, had appealed for Mark Hillary as his employer. However a letter from the Reeth local tribunal stated that Mr Place had nothing to do with the business as it had been his wif'e's businees prior to her second marriage to him. Her son Mark Hillary ran the business as Mr Place had a large farm and had no interest in the business. The local tribunal wrote to the appeal tribunal in support of the applicant as they strongly disagreed with the military representative in this case: ‘The man being only 27 years of age and is not entitled to exemption.’
